Every recommendation on BlindSelection follows the same structured process. This page explains how we research, evaluate, and choose the products we recommend — and how we keep our content accurate over time.
Our research process
For each product category and situation guide, we follow these steps:
- Identify the situation. We start with a real problem someone faces — not a product category. What does a nursery parent actually need? What matters to a renter? This shapes every recommendation.
- Research the product landscape. We review current offerings across Amazon, Target, Walmart, and specialty blinds retailers. We check manufacturer specifications, product descriptions, and sizing options.
- Analyze verified reviews. We read hundreds of customer reviews across retailers, focusing on recurring themes: what works, what fails, what surprises people. A single 5-star review means little; 200 reviews averaging 4.3 stars with consistent praise for light blocking tells us something real.
- Consult expert sources. We cross-reference our findings with guidance from home improvement experts, interior designers, child safety organizations, and energy efficiency resources.
- Compare across retailers. We check pricing, availability, return policies, and shipping at multiple retailers so our recommendations aren't biased toward one store.
- Write the recommendation. We explain what we recommend, why, and for whom — including who should NOT buy it.
What we evaluate
Every product recommendation is assessed on these criteria:
| Criterion | What we look for |
|---|---|
| Light control | Actual light-blocking percentage, not marketing claims. We distinguish between blackout (95%+) and room darkening (70-90%). |
| Safety | Cordless operation for child safety. Compliance with CPSC guidelines. No dangling cords or small parts near cribs. |
| Value | Performance relative to price. A $20 shade that blocks 95% of light is better value than a $60 shade that blocks 97%. |
| Ease of installation | Can most people install this with basic tools? Is it renter-friendly? How clear are the instructions? |
| Durability | How does it hold up over months of daily use? Do the mechanisms jam? Does the fabric sag or discolor? |
| Availability | Is it in stock at major retailers? Can you get it quickly? Are common sizes readily available? |
| Return policy | Can you return it if the size is wrong? Blinds are easy to mis-measure — hassle-free returns matter. |
What we don't do
- We don't accept payment for recommendations. No brand or retailer can pay for placement in our guides. Our affiliate commissions come from the retailers when you purchase — not from the brands we recommend.
- We don't recommend products we wouldn't use ourselves. If something is cheap but terrible, we'll tell you to skip it.
- We don't pretend every product is great. Our guides include "skip this" callouts and honest downsides for every pick.
How we stay current
Window blinds products change — models get discontinued, prices shift, new options appear. Here's how we keep our content accurate:
- Price checks. We verify pricing on all recommended products regularly. Every guide shows when prices were last checked.
- Availability audits. If a recommended product goes out of stock, we update the guide with the next best alternative.
- Review monitoring. If a product we recommend starts receiving consistently negative reviews (quality drop, changed materials), we reassess our recommendation.
- Date stamps. Every page shows "Last updated" and "Prices checked" dates so you know how current the information is.
Editorial independence
BlindSelection earns money through affiliate commissions — but our editorial process is independent of our revenue. We do not:
- Recommend products because they pay higher commissions
- Suppress negative reviews of products from affiliate partners
- Accept sponsored content or paid placements
- Let any retailer or brand influence our rankings
Our goal is to be the most useful window blinds resource on the internet. That only works if you trust our recommendations. Full affiliate disclosure →
